You are a life path 1 when the eight digits of your birth date add up to 10, 19, 28, 37 or 46. In an early numerology book, Balliett (1905) describes 1 as a strong nature with the power "to create, develop and govern".
How do I know if I am a life path 1?
Add all eight digits of your birth date, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left, or until a step lands on 11, 22 or 33.
For birth years from 1900 to 2099, a life path 1 always starts from one of five totals: 10, 19, 28, 37 or 46. The last four pass through 10 on the way to 1.
| Sample date | Total of the eight digits | Reduction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January 2006 | 10 | 1 + 0 = 1 |
| 5 August 2004 | 19 | 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 |
| 13 May 1990 | 28 | 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 |
| 24 June 1987 | 37 | 3 + 7 = 10, then 1 |
| 28 September 1998 | 46 | 4 + 6 = 10, then 1 |

1 + 3 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
The life path number for this date is 1.

What does life path 1 mean in early numerology books?
One early American numerology book is Mrs. L. Dow Balliett's How to Attain Success Through the Strength of Vibration (Balliett, 1905). She wrote that the birth month, day and year, added together, show "the path in life we ourselves chose" (page 38). Under the heading "No. 1", she wrote that 1 "indicates a strong nature in which the power lies to create, develop and govern all things pertaining to this life" (page 21).
They are original and comprehensive in thought and always expect their opinions to be respected.
Read this as tradition, not as a measured fact about you. Her method also differs from NinePath's: she kept 11 and 22 apart instead of adding them in (page 38). To try the idea in a day, start one task on your own.
Can life path 1 be a master number?
No, 1 is never a master number. The master numbers are 11, 22 and 33, and they reduce to 2, 4 and 6, so a total that ends on 1 never passes through them. The order of adding doesn't matter for a 1 either. Changing the order never changes the remainder after dividing by 9, and with no master number on the way, every order ends on 1.
NinePath adds all eight digits and reduces step by step, keeping only 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers. A life path 1 has none to keep. Your life path comes from your birth date only, so it stays the same for life.

Questions people ask
Is life path 10 the same as life path 1?
Yes. A total of 10 reduces to 1 + 0 = 1, so 10 is a step on the way, not a separate life path.
Do I need my birth time to know if I am a 1?
No. The life path uses only the day, month and year you were born.
Can two calculators give me different answers if I am a 1?
Not if both add the digits of the same date down to one digit: both end on 1. A master number can't hide behind a 1, because 11, 22 and 33 reduce to 2, 4 and 6.
