Yes, numerology can be wrong in more than one way. The arithmetic can be wrong, and two methods can give different numbers for the same date. A correct sum doesn't make a meaning true, because meanings are interpretations from a tradition.
How can the arithmetic go wrong?
A slip can start before the adding: a dropped digit, or a year written with two digits instead of four. For the life path, NinePath uses one fixed rule. To find your life path number, add all eight digits of your birth date, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left. If a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, NinePath keeps it as a master number.

1 + 4 + 3 + 9 + 2 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. With all eight digits: 29, then 11, then 2.
The short year gives 1 instead of 11 (single digit 2), so this sum is wrong.
To check a total, add the digits again in a different order. Digit sums end on the same single digit in any order: the remainder after dividing by 9 (or 9 when the remainder is 0). So two different single digits mean a slip.

Why can two methods give different numbers?
Here nobody has made a mistake. Different methods follow different rules, so they can disagree.
| Method | What is kept apart or not reduced | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Balliett, 1905 | 11 and 22 are never added | Her book, page 38 |
| Taylor, 1926 | 11 and 22 are not reduced | Her book, page 23 |
| NinePath | 11, 22 or 33 at any step | NinePath's method |
Balliett's own sample date shows how far apart the results can be.

Her rule: 1 + 1 + 8 + 6 + 0 = 16, then 7, with 22 kept apart. All eight digits: 0 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 8 + 6 + 0 = 20, then 2.
Her rule gives 7 and 22; adding every digit gives 2.
Both sums are correct. They answer to different rules, so pick one method and use it every time.
Can the meaning of a number be wrong?
A sum can't settle that. The arithmetic can be checked, but correct arithmetic doesn't validate an interpretation. Wikipedia describes numerology as "the belief in an occult, divine or mystical relationship between a number and metaphysical phenomena or ideas". The meanings are interpretations from a tradition. Where an interpretation makes a concrete claim about someone's personality or about events, that is a different kind of claim, one that could be tested, and a correct sum says nothing about it.
Number symbolism is an ancient and pervasive aspect of human thought, deeply intertwined with religion, philosophy, mysticism, and mathematics.
So read the meaning of a number as tradition and a prompt for reflection, not as a measured fact about you.

Questions people ask
Is numerology real?
Numerology is a real tradition with a long history, described on Wikipedia as a belief. Its arithmetic can be checked, but a correct sum doesn't validate a meaning: meanings are interpretations from a tradition.
Why did two calculators give me different numbers?
Check three things: whether both used all eight digits, whether both keep 11, 22 and 33, and whether both add in the same order. A difference in any of these can change the number shown.
Can my life path number change?
Not with the same method, because your birth date doesn't change. A different method can show a different number for the same date.
