Why isn't 11 reduced to 2 in numerology?

Where the master number rule comes from, a sample birth date that lands on 11, and why 44 is treated differently.

Short answer

11 isn't reduced to 2 when a numerology method treats it as a master number, a total read on its own rather than only as a step on the way to 2. Books from 1905 and 1926 already kept 11 and 22. The 2 doesn't disappear: 1 + 1 = 2, and a method can show both.

11 isn't reduced to 2 when a numerology method treats it as a master number: a total that is read on its own, not only as a step on the way to 2. The 2 doesn't disappear, because 1 + 1 = 2, and a method can show both.

Where does the master number rule come from?

It goes back at least to early American numerology books. In 1905, L. Dow Balliett worked out a sample birth date of 22 January 1860 and wrote that "11 and 22 are never added" (page 38). She kept the 22nd day apart and gave the birth number as "7, 22".

In 1926, Ariel Yvon Taylor wrote the rule for every total:

All double numbers are reduced to single numbers by the addition of their digits with the exception of 11 and 22, the master vibrations.

Ariel Yvon Taylor, Numerology Made Plain, 1926, page 23

So in both books, 11 and 22 are kept. Not every method follows this: Wikipedia's Digital root article notes that 11 and 22 "are not always completely reduced to a single digit".

How does a birth date land on 11?

The life path is one place where 11 turns up. To find your life path number, add all eight digits of your birth date, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left. If a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, NinePath keeps it as a master number.

Worked exampleThe sample date 14 March 1992
  1. D1
  2. D4
  3. M0
  4. M3
  5. Y1
  6. Y9
  7. Y9
  8. Y2

1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11. 11 is kept; it reduces to 1 + 1 = 2.

The life path for this date is 11, with 2 as its single digit.

The total 29 is not a master number itself. It only passes through 11 on the way down.

Is 11 still a 2?

Yes. A master number still has a single digit: 11 reduces to 2, 22 to 4 and 33 to 6, and NinePath keeps both. Totals such as 44 reduce in the usual way.

Arithmetic can't tell 11 and 2 apart here. Adding digits always ends on the remainder after dividing by 9 (or on 9 itself when that remainder is 0), and 11 leaves 2. Keeping 11 is a choice of the tradition, not a rule of arithmetic.

Methods differ on the list. Balliett and Taylor kept 11 and 22. NinePath keeps 11, 22 and 33, and totals of 44 and above reduce in the usual way.

What this means for your day

For your day

Do

Write down both numbers when a sum lands on 11: the 11 and the 2.

Don't

Don't treat a master number as better than its single digit.

Questions people ask

Is 11 the same as 2 in numerology?

In a method with master numbers, no: 11 is read on its own, with 2 as its single digit. In a method without them, 11 simply becomes 2.

Is 29 a master number?

No. 29 reduces to 2 + 9 = 11, so a method that keeps master numbers stops at 11, not at 29.

Can the order of adding change whether I get 11?

Yes. For the sample date 3 January 1960, all eight digits give 20, then 2, but reducing each part first gives 1 + 3 + 7 = 11. The final single digit is 2 either way.
