In NinePath's method, for birth years 1900 to 2099, you are a life path 4 when the eight digits of your birth date add up to 4, 13, 31 or 40. In an early numerology book, Balliett (1905) calls the people of 4 "critical and discerning".
How do I know if I am a life path 4?
To find your life path number, add all eight digits of your birth date, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left. If a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, NinePath keeps it as a master number. The full method is in how to calculate your life path number.
For birth years 1900 to 2099, a plain 4 comes from four totals: 4, 13, 31 and 40.
| Sample date | Total | Reduction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January 2000 | 4 | Already one digit |
| 13 January 2006 | 13 | 1 + 3 = 4 |
| 15 March 1993 | 31 | 3 + 1 = 4 |
| 6 September 1996 | 40 | 4 + 0 = 4 |
| 9 August 2003 | 22 | Kept as 22 |

1 + 5 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 31, then 3 + 1 = 4.
The life path number for this date is 4.

What does life path 4 mean in early numerology books?
One early American numerology book is Mrs. L. Dow Balliett's How to Attain Success Through the Strength of Vibration (Balliett, 1905). She wrote that the birth date, added up, shows "the path in life we ourselves chose" (page 38). Under the heading "No. 4", she wrote: "They are critical and discerning" (page 25).
No. 4 represents the cube perfect in its ways on all sides.
Read this as tradition, not as a measured fact about you. Balliett gave 22 its own section (page 32), apart from 4. To try the idea in a day, finish one practical task.
Is life path 22 the same as life path 4?
Not quite. A master number still has a single digit: 11 reduces to 2, 22 to 4 and 33 to 6, and NinePath keeps both. So a total of 22 gives life path 22, with the single digit 4.
For birth years 1900 to 2099, 22 only comes straight from a total of 22. The largest total in that range is 48, and no larger total passes through 22 on the way down.

0 + 9 + 0 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 3 = 22. The step lands on 22, so it is kept. Its single digit is 2 + 2 = 4.
The life path number for this date is 22, with the single digit 4.
Balliett's method differs: she kept 11 and 22 apart instead of adding them in (page 38). Pick one method and use it every time. Your life path comes from your birth date only, so it stays the same for life.

Questions people ask
Is life path 13 the same as life path 4?
Yes. A total of 13 reduces to 1 + 3 = 4, so 13 is a step on the way, not a separate life path. So are 31 and 40.
Do I need my birth time to know if I am a 4?
No. The life path uses only the day, month and year you were born.
