Your sun, moon and rising signs are three positions in the sky at the moment you were born: the sign the Sun was in, the sign the Moon was in, and the sign coming up on the eastern horizon.
What does each of the three signs measure?
| Sign | Where it is measured | Read in astrology as |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | Where the Sun was along the zodiac | The conscious ego and the self |
| Moon sign | Where the Moon was along the zodiac | Intuition, emotions and habits |
| Rising sign | The sign coming up in the east | Physical appearance and awakening consciousness |
The positions are astronomy: with the same zodiac and the same birth details, anyone gets the same three signs. The last column describes how astrology traditionally reads each position, not anything measured. In that tradition, the Moon is associated with "a person's intuition, emotions, unconscious habits, rhythms, memories, moods, instincts".

Why does each sign need different birth details?
The three move at very different speeds. The slower a sign changes, the less you need to know to find it.

- D24
- S12
Sun: 365 ÷ 12 ≈ 30.4 days. Moon: 27.3 ÷ 12 ≈ 2.3 days. Rising sign: 24 hours ÷ 12 = 2 hours.
The Sun stays about a month in a sign, the Moon a little over two days, and the rising sign about two hours.
The Sun takes a year to go round the zodiac, and the Moon about 27.3 days. Between the polar circles, the Earth's turn sweeps all twelve signs across the eastern horizon once a day, and the two hours are an average. Beyond the polar circles, some degrees of the zodiac never cross the horizon.
| Sign | What you need | Without a birth time |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | Birth date | Known, unless the Sun changed sign that day |
| Moon sign | Birth date and time, with its time zone | Known only if the Moon stayed in one sign all day |
| Rising sign | Birth date, time and place | Not known |
So to find all three, you need your birth date, time and place.
Which signs can you know without a birth time?
Your sun sign is almost always safe. It is only in doubt if you were born on one of the twelve days a year when the Sun moves into a new sign.
The moon sign is less certain. Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, it changes sign at some point on a little under half of all days: about 44% of days from 2000 to 2029, counted in UTC. On those UTC days, a UTC date alone gives two possible moon signs. A local birth date covers its own 24 hours, set by its time zone, so what counts is whether the Moon changed sign within that window.
The rising sign can't be worked out from the date at all. Between the polar circles, twelve signs pass in a day, so any of them is possible.

Questions people ask
Can my sun and moon be in the same sign?
Yes. At a new moon, the Moon and the Sun have the same ecliptic longitude, so people born around a new moon often have both in one sign.
Are these three signs my whole birth chart?
No. A birth chart also shows the other planets, the angles and the houses at the moment of birth. The sun, moon and rising signs are three parts of it.
