A Saturn return is the time when Saturn comes back to the zodiac degree it held when you were born. Saturn takes about 29.4 Earth years to go round the Sun, so the first return comes in your late twenties. Astrologers also count returns in the fifties and eighties.
How long does Saturn take to come back?
NASA gives Saturn's year as "about 29.4 Earth years (10,756 Earth days)". That is 29.4 ÷ 12 ≈ 2.5 years in each sign, on average.
Seen from Earth, Saturn appears to move backwards for 136 to 138 days a year (2025 to 2027), as Earth overtakes it. This is apparent retrograde motion. If the backward loop covers your birth degree, Saturn crosses it three times; if not, once. Checked with Astronomy Engine for every birth date from 1900 to 2009, with each birth taken at 12:00 UTC, the first exact pass came between ages 28.4 and 29.9.

Where is Saturn now?
In early November 2026, Saturn is in Aries, retrograde, at about 9°.
| Date (UTC) | What Saturn does |
|---|---|
| 25 May 2025, 04:17 | Enters Aries |
| 1 Sep 2025, 07:14 | Moves back into Pisces (retrograde) |
| 14 Feb 2026, 00:40 | Enters Aries again |
| 26 Jul 2026 | Turns retrograde at about 15° Aries |
| 10 Dec 2026 | Turns direct at about 8° Aries |
| 13 Apr 2028, 04:05 | Enters Taurus |
The dates come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library (version 2.1.19). They use Saturn's apparent position seen from Earth, in the tropical zodiac. Times are in UTC, rounded to the nearest minute, so your local date can differ.

Natal Saturn: 12.07° Aries, shown as 12°. Saturn is back at that degree on 29 May 2026, 24 Sep 2026 and 19 Feb 2027. Age at the first pass: 2026 − 1997 = 29.
For this sample date, the first Saturn return falls at age 29, in three passes from May 2026 to February 2027.
The dates use 12:00 UTC on the birth date and the unrounded natal longitude, 12.0675°. A literal 12° would move the middle pass to 25 Sep 2026.
What does a Saturn return mean in astrology?
In Western astrology, the return is read as a threshold between stages of life. Wikipedia's article, citing Liz Greene's Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil (1976), says the first return "is seen as the time of reaching full adulthood".
Saturn's position is a measured fact. The meaning is an interpretation from a tradition. A concrete claim, such as a life event at a set age, is testable. Correct arithmetic doesn't make it true.

Questions people ask
Is the Saturn return at 27 or at 29?
Both are used. Wikipedia, citing Greene (1976), says the first return "is seen as influential from ages 27 to 30". The exact pass, for births at 12:00 UTC from 1900 to 2009, came between ages 28.4 and 29.9.
Do I need my birth time for my Saturn return?
It can matter. Birth time can change whether there are one or three passes or shift the first exact pass by months. For the sample date 14 April 1997 only, a birth at 00:00 or 23:59 UTC moved each pass by less than a day from the 12:00 dates; for 7 May 1997, the same change turned three passes from July 2026 into one pass in March 2027.
What is the second Saturn return?
It is Saturn's next return to the same degree, about 29 years after the first. For the sample date 14 April 1997, it comes on 28 March 2056, at age 58.
