What are master numbers 11, 22 and 33?

Which totals count as master numbers, what each reduces to, how a birth date lands on one, and what a 1926 book said they mean.

Short answer

Master numbers are the totals 11, 22 and 33 when a numerology method keeps them instead of reducing them to one digit. A master number still has a single digit: 11 reduces to 2, 22 to 4 and 33 to 6, and NinePath keeps both. Early books by Balliett (1905) and Taylor (1926) kept only 11 and 22.

Master numbers are the totals 11, 22 and 33 when a numerology method keeps them as they are instead of reducing them to one digit. Their single digits are 2, 4 and 6, so a master number can be written as a pair: 11 and 2, 22 and 4, 33 and 6.

Which numbers count as master numbers?

The list depends on the method. Ariel Yvon Taylor's Numerology Made Plain (Taylor, 1926) names "two master numbers", 11 and 22, alongside "the nine digits" (page 22). Mrs. L. Dow Balliett (1905) also kept 11 and 22 apart, writing that "11 and 22 are never added" (page 38).

NinePath keeps three. A master number still has a single digit: 11 reduces to 2, 22 to 4 and 33 to 6, and NinePath keeps both. Totals of 44 and above reduce in the usual way.

How does a birth date land on a master number?

To find your life path number, add all eight digits of your birth date, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left. If a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, NinePath keeps it as a master number.

For birth years 1900 to 2099, the eight digits add up to between 4 and 48. A life path 11 comes from a total of 11, 29, 38 or 47. Life path 22 needs a total of exactly 22, and life path 33 a total of exactly 33. No larger total in that range passes through 22 or 33.

For example, 9 June 1985 adds up to 38, then 3 + 8 = 11, and 15 July 2007 adds up to exactly 22.

  3. M0
  4. M5
  5. Y1
  6. Y9
  7. Y8
  8. Y3

1 + 6 + 0 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 3 = 33. 33 is kept; it reduces to 3 + 3 = 6.

The life path for this date is 33, with 6 as its single digit.

In a NinePath count over all 73,049 dates from 1900 to 2099, about 15% give a master life path: about 6.6% give 11, 5.2% give 22 and 3.0% give 33.

What did early books say 11 and 22 mean?

Taylor gave each of her two master numbers a short meaning (page 22). She wrote that 11 "stands for a new beginning in a higher cycle".

22 links the spiritual with the material and makes inspirational things practical, directing large enterprises with diplomacy and tact.

Her list stops at 22, so she gives no meaning for 33. Read these lines as tradition, not as a measured fact about you.

To try these in a day: for 11, write down one new idea; for 22, turn one plan into a first step.

Questions people ask

Can a personal year be a master number?

Yes. In NinePath's method, a final total of 11 or 22, or one whose digits add up to 11 (such as 29), can be kept as a master number; the birthday step always reduces to one digit. From 2026 to 2099 the final total is never more than 29, so it can reach only 11 or 22.

Which master number is the rarest?

For birth years 1900 to 2099, 33 is the rarest master life path. In the same NinePath count, about 3.0% of dates add up to exactly 33.
