Numerology for beginners: where do I start?

Numerology for beginners: why to start with your life path number, a sample date worked out, and what to learn next.

Short answer

Numerology for beginners starts with your life path number. To find your life path number, add all eight digits of your birth date, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left. If a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, NinePath keeps it as a master number. Then learn personal year, master and name numbers.

Numerology for beginners starts with your life path number. Your life path comes from your birth date only, so it stays the same for life. Then learn the personal year, the master numbers and the name numbers, in that order.

What is numerology?

Numerology is the belief in a mystical link between numbers and ideas. It is also the study of the number values given to the letters of words and names. The arithmetic can be checked step by step. The meanings given to each number come from a tradition, not from measurement.

Why start with the life path number?

The life path number needs one thing you already know: your full birth date. For what the number stands for, see what a life path number is.

To find your life path number, add all eight digits of your birth date, then add the digits of the total until one digit is left. If a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, NinePath keeps it as a master number.

Worked exampleThe sample date 14 March 1992
  1. D1
  2. D4
  3. M0
  4. M3
  5. Y1
  6. Y9
  7. Y9
  8. Y2

1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11. 11 is a master number, so it is kept; it reduces to 1 + 1 = 2.

The life path number for this date is 11, which reduces to 2.

What should you learn next?

Life pathAll eight digits of your birth dateNever
Personal yearYour birth month and day plus the current yearEvery year
Name numbersThe letters of a name, each given a valueWhen the name changes

The personal year comes second. Your birthday adds its reduced single digit; the year adds its digits unreduced. In NinePath's method, a final total of 11 or 22, or one whose digits add up to 11 (such as 29), can be kept as a master number; the birthday step always reduces to one digit.

Worked exampleThe sample birthday 7 March, in 2026
  1. M0
  2. M3
  3. D0
  4. D7
  5. Y2
  6. Y0
  7. Y2
  8. Y6

Birthday: 0 + 3 + 0 + 7 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Year: 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10. Then 1 + 10 = 11, kept as a master number.

The personal year for this birthday in 2026 is 11, which reduces to 2.

The personal year changes on 1 January. The personal cycle doesn't use your Life Path.

Master numbers come third. A master number still has a single digit: 11 reduces to 2, 22 to 4 and 33 to 6, and NinePath keeps both. Totals of 44 and above reduce in the usual way.

Name numbers come last, because they need a letter chart. In the Pythagorean method, the letters of the Latin alphabet are given the values 1 to 9.

What this means for your day

For your day

Do

Work out your life path by hand once before you use any calculator.

Don't

Don't compare numbers from methods that treat 11, 22 and 33 differently.

Questions people ask

Do I need my birth time for numerology?

No. The life path and the personal year use only the date. Name numbers use the letters of a name.

Is numerology the same as astrology?

No. Numerology works with the numbers in a date or a name. Astrology works with the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets, although the two are often mentioned together.

Why can two calculators give different life path numbers?

Some reduce the day, month and year separately before adding them, instead of adding all eight digits at once. That can change whether a master number appears on the way, but not the final single digit.
