Part of astrology is real in the sense that it can be measured: where the Sun, Moon and planets are, and which sign each one is in. The meanings astrologers give those positions are interpretations from a tradition, and that part is a different question.
What part of astrology can be measured?
The positions. A sign in Western astrology is a 30-degree slice of the Sun's yearly path, counted from the March equinox. Anyone with an ephemeris, a table of planet positions, can check which sign a planet is in at a given moment. NinePath uses the tropical zodiac.
| Statement | What kind it is | How it can be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury stations direct on 13 Nov 2026 | Calculation | Against an ephemeris |
| Mercury retrograde is a time to slow down | Interpretation from a tradition | A sum can't settle it |
| A Scorpio Sun makes a person secretive | A concrete claim about personality | By a controlled test |
So "is astrology real?" splits in three. The sky positions are facts you can check. The meanings are interpretations. A concrete claim about personality or events is testable, and correct arithmetic doesn't validate it.

Why isn't the Sun in the constellation of my sign?
The signs and the constellations have drifted apart. The tropical zodiac starts each year at the March equinox, and that point slowly moves against the stars, by about 1 degree every 72 years. Wikipedia's article on the zodiac puts it this way: the point of the March equinox "has moved from Aries into Pisces" since Babylonian times.

222 ÷ 30 = 7, remainder 12. Seven whole signs, Aries to Libra, are behind it, so the Sun is about 12° into the eighth sign.
The Sun is in the sign Scorpio, but by the official constellation borders it is in front of the constellation Libra.
The Sun's position here and the Mercury station in the table above were calculated with Astronomy Engine, an open-source library (version 2.1.19); the longitude is rounded to the nearest degree.
The sign and the constellation are two different maps of the same sky. The constellation borders were drawn by Eugène Delporte for the International Astronomical Union and published in 1930.
How is astrology classified?
Wikipedia's article on astrology and science describes astrology as a set of belief systems.
Astrology consists of a number of belief systems that hold that there is a relationship between astronomical phenomena and events or descriptions of personality in the human world.
Wikipedia lists astrology as a pseudoscience. A long tradition is not the same thing as scientific evidence.
Concrete claims have been put to controlled tests. One is Shawn Carlson's "A double-blind test of astrology", published in Nature on 5 December 1985. It reports two double-blind tests of whether astrological natal charts can be used to describe the personality traits of test subjects. You can read the study in Nature.
What this means for your day
For your day
Do
Check a planet's sign and degree in an ephemeris before you read what it means.
Don't
Don't read a horoscope line as a measured fact about you.
Questions people ask
Is astrology a science?
No. Wikipedia's article on astrology describes it as a range of divinatory practices "recognized as pseudoscientific since the 18th century". Astronomy is the science that measures where the planets are.
Is astrology the same as astronomy?
No. Astronomy measures the positions and motions of the Sun, Moon and planets. Astrology takes those positions and reads meanings into them.
Why do some astrologers give me a different sign?
They may use the sidereal zodiac, which keeps the signs lined up with the stars, instead of the tropical zodiac, which starts at the March equinox. Your birth date is the same; the map is different.
