What does my Sun sign say about how I work?

The element and mode keywords astrology gives each Sun sign, a 12-sign table with our suggestion for today and what it can't tell you.

Short answer

In astrology, your Sun sign says something about how you work only as tradition, not as a measured fact. Each sign has an element (fire, earth, air or water) and a mode (cardinal, fixed or mutable). Astrologers attach keywords to both. Use them as a prompt for one task, never as a verdict.

Astrology doesn't give a measured answer about how you work. In the tradition, a Sun sign is read through its element and its mode, each with a few keywords. Use them as a prompt for one task, not as a verdict on you or your career.

What do the element and the mode mean?

In astrology, the Sun is usually thought to represent "the conscious ego, the self and its expression". Your Sun sign is the sign it was in on your birth date. Each sign has one element (fire, earth, air or water) and one mode (cardinal, fixed or mutable). Wikipedia's article on astrological signs gives keywords for each, citing Stephen Arroyo (1989) and Margaret Hone (1978).

Table 1 · Element and mode keywords, from Arroyo (1989) and Hone (1978)
LabelKeywords
FireAssertion, drive, willpower
EarthPracticality, caution, material world
AirCommunication, socialization, conceptualization
WaterEmotion, empathy, sensitivity
CardinalAction, dynamic, initiative, great force
FixedResistance to change, great willpower, inflexible
MutableAdaptability, flexibility, resourcefulness

The labels are read together, as in this example from the same article, citing Hone: "Capricorn is the cardinal earth sign, impressing its association with action (cardinal modality) in the material world (earth element)."

What could I try today, by Sun sign?

The "In a day" column is NinePath's own editorial suggestion for each pair of labels. Arroyo and Hone give the keywords only; the actions are not quoted from them. Each one is a suggestion, not a description of you.

The dates come from Astronomy Engine 2.1.19, an open-source astronomy library: the Sun's apparent geocentric position in the tropical zodiac. Each sign runs until the next starts. The dates shift by a day or so between years. Times are in UTC, rounded to the nearest minute, so your local date can differ.

Can my Sun sign tell me which job suits me?

Not as a measured fact. In the tradition, work is read from another part of the chart: Wikipedia's article on houses says the tenth house "governs career, public reputation, and social status". Houses need your birth time and place.

A concrete claim, such as one sign being better at a certain job, is testable. Correct sign dates don't make it true.

Questions people ask

What if I was born on the day the Sun changed sign?

Then you need your birth time and its time zone. The Sun changes sign at a set moment, shown in the table above in UTC, rounded to the nearest minute.

What do cardinal, fixed and mutable mean?

They are the three modes. A sign's mode refers to its position in its season. Aries falls in the first month of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, so astrologers call it cardinal.
