How can I start the day feeling ready?

What to settle the night before, a three-step morning ritual with examples, and why the sunrise time is worth checking.

Short answer

Plan most of your morning the night before, then keep the morning itself to a few small steps in the same order: check when the sun rises, choose one thing that matters today, and write it down. These are practical steps you can try, not a promise about how you will feel.

Decide most of the morning the night before, and keep the morning itself to a few small steps in the same order. A short morning ritual can be as simple as checking when the sun rises, choosing one thing that matters today and writing it down.

What can I get ready the night before?

The fewer choices left for the morning, the shorter the list you face when you wake. Three things are worth settling in the evening:

  1. Look at tomorrow's first fixed time, such as a meeting, a train or a school run.
  2. Put out what you need for it, in one place.
  3. Write tomorrow's one thing on a note you will see first.

What could a short morning ritual look like?

In this article, a ritual means the same few steps, in the same order, done on purpose. Wikipedia defines a habit as "a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously". Here it is the chosen version: you pick the steps.

Table 1 · A three-step morning ritual, with an example for each step

1. Check the lightLook up today's sunrise timeSunrise 06:30 in New York on 4 Nov
2. Choose one thingPick one task that matters todaySend the draft before lunch
3. Write it downPut it where you will see itOne line on a sticky note

Keep the steps small enough to do on a rushed day. If a step keeps getting skipped, swap it for a smaller one rather than adding more.

Why check the sunrise time?

It tells you how much of your morning is in daylight, and it moves. It moves most when the clocks change. In the US, daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday in November, which in 2026 is 1 November.

Worked exampleSunrise in New York, before and after the clocks go back on 1 November 2026
  1. Sat7:25
  2. Sun6:26
  3. h1

Sat 31 Oct, sunrise 07:25 EDT. Sun 1 Nov, clocks back 1 hour: sunrise 06:26 EST. 07:25 − 1 h = 06:25, and the Sun rises about 1 minute later each day.

On the clock, sunrise in New York jumps almost an hour earlier overnight, to about 06:30 by Wednesday 4 November.

The times were calculated with Astronomy Engine, an open-source library (version 2.1.19), for central New York (40.71° N, 74.01° W) at sea level, and rounded to the minute. Where you live, the times differ, so check your own.

What this means for your day

For your day

Do

Write down the one thing that matters today before you open any messages.

Don't

Don't add a fourth step until the first three fit into your morning.

Questions people ask

How long should a morning routine be?

There is no set length. Choose steps that fit the time you actually have on a busy morning, and keep them in the same order.

What is the difference between a morning routine and a morning ritual?

People use the two words loosely. In this article, a ritual is a routine you choose on purpose: the same few steps, in the same order, each morning.

What if I miss a morning?

Start again the next day with the same first step. The list stays the same, so there is nothing to catch up on.
